Mary Battiata, a reporter at the Washington Post newspaper, launched Little Pink in summer 1999 and derived the band name from the Band's album Music From the Big Pink. Drawing on leftovers from her earlier project Star Nash, the journalist and singer/songwriter brought in players from the Graverobbers and Last Train Home to lay down the group's first recordings. Eight songs were tracked that same summer, with further tracks captured over the ensuing months. The resulting 2001 release Cul-de-sac Cowgirl plunged deep into the foundations of alternative country and country-folk.
