Little Victor, born Victor Macoggi, launched his path as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player at the age of 14 through a formative club residency alongside Uncle Ben Perry on Memphis' storied Beale Street. Demos cut first with Alex Chilton and subsequently with Hubert Sumlin, the guitarist from Howlin' Wolf's band, preceded the dapper-dressed performer's 1994 debut album Cuttin' Out. Space Shuttle appeared two years afterward, while a French documentary titled Un Jour Avec...R.L. Burnside from 1999 paired him with blues chanteuse Sophie Kay; that partnership also produced a pair of albums.

Throughout the 2000s the "King of Grit" kept issuing well-received recordings steeped in old-school juke joint R&B before connecting with late blues legend and childhood hero Louisiana Red. Their first joint effort, the award-winning Back to the Black Bayou, surfaced in 2009, and Memphis Mojo followed a couple of years later to duplicate the acclaim. During the interim Victor placed Boogie All Night on the Barcelona-based El Toro label, spotlighting blues harp maestro Bob Corritore. Two tracks on the 2013 album Shadow of the Night by Spanish bluesmen Pig Fat featured the artist as a guest.
