Biography
Liza Stepanova has maintained a wide-ranging career that encompasses solo recitals, chamber collaborations, vocal accompaniment, and classroom instruction. Her piano studies took place at Berlin’s Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler under Joseph Kalichstein, Seymour Lipkin, Jerome Lowenthal, and George Sava. With Wolfram Rieger she concentrated on art-song collaboration and also took part in Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s master classes at the Hugo Wolf Lied-Fest. She earned her DMA from the Juilliard School, where she later taught, and she also joined the faculty at Smith College. In Los Angeles she has served as artistic director and program director for SongFest at the Colburn School. Festival appearances have included the Davos Festival in Switzerland, the Salzburg Schlosskonzert, Music@Menlo, and the La Jolla SummerFest. Among her recital partners are violinist Cho-Liang Lin, violist James Dunham, clarinetist Charles Neidich, soprano Lucy Shelton, and mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer. Committed to contemporary repertoire, she has introduced works by John Harbison, Gabriela Lena Frank, and William Bolcom while also presenting pieces by John Adams, Robert Beaser, Tom Cipullo, John Harbison, John Musto, Tobias Picker, and Steve Reich. As a member of the Lysander Piano Trio she has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She currently holds the position of assistant professor in the piano department of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia.
