Biography
Llwybr Llaethog fused industrial funk through an eclectic lens and helped shape the post-punk landscape of the late 1980s. Formed by hardcore punk anarchists, the Wales-based band wove together acid house, hip-hop, rap, reggae, dub, and African rhythms. Richard Boon, former editor of the Rough Trade Catalogue, observed in the liner notes for their 1991 album Mewn Dyb that "If you put Adrian Sherwood, On-U Sound System, Mark Stewart & the Maffia, Cabaret Voltaire, Grandmaster Flash, Laibach, Test Department and the Clash all together, it might sound like this." Critics in the music press praised the band's hard-edged sound. Melody Maker characterized it as "industrial housey sampling, scratching stuff with dancey beats, and bouts of that dub thang," while Music Week/U.K. noted that "their sample-heavy dance groove is sharp enough to get anyone dancing." The lineup includes John Griffiths on drums, vocals, scratching, and samples, Pete Millward on tin whistle and synthesizer, Ben Bentham on bass and percussion, and Kevs Ford on guitar, keyboards, banjo, trumpet, and vocals.
