A collective of seasoned indie rock figures—David Bazan of Pedro the Lion, Trey Many from Velour 100 and Starflyer 59, T.W. Walsh formerly of Pedro the Lion and the Soft Drugs, alongside Jason Martin of Starflyer 59—Lo Tom surfaced in 2017 with a direct, stripped-down approach centered on rock instrumentation. Three years afterward, they issued a second full-length.

The project originated from the simple desire of longtime friends to reconvene and perform rock music as a unit. In spring 2017 they released their opening track, “Overboard,” a guitar-propelled rocker that harnessed the quartet’s accumulated experience. Their self-titled debut LP appeared that July via Barsuk Records. Where the first effort maintained a spare aesthetic through limited overdubs and two guitar parts per composition, the self-released LP2 of 2020 ventured into richer territory, incorporating weightier lyrical concerns and more intricate song structures.
