Biography
Lokai comprises the Austrian guitar duo Florian Kmet and Stefan Nemeth. On their independent Mosz Records imprint they issued the avant-garde electro-acoustic album 7 Million in 2005, after which the pair dispersed into assorted solo and side endeavors before regrouping four years afterward to create the follow-up Transition, issued by Thrill Jockey in 2009. At intervals the duo adopts a found-object method toward composition, constructing rhythmic foundations from sources that range from heating ducts to stray snare drums, while frequently routing their guitars through synthesizers and samplers; nevertheless the guiding principle surfaces within the finished works. Kmet also belongs to Superlooper and has collaborated with Wolfgang Mitterer, Gunter Schneider, Max Nagl, Franz Hautzinger, Martin Brandlmayr, Ludwig Bekic, Jorge Sanchéz-Chiong, and numerous others, whereas Nemeth participates in Radian and Synapsis and has worked with Martin Brandlmayr, John Norman, Martin Siewert, Werner Dafeldecker, Oskar Aichinger, Franz Hautzinger, John Butcher, Dean Roberts, Christian Fennesz, Otomo Yoshihide, Sachiko M., Toshimaru Nakamura, Florian Hecker, Hanno Leichtmann, Nicholas Bussmann, Hannes Löschel, Paul Skrepek, Achim Tang, and additional partners.
