London Modular Alliance derived its classic electro aesthetic and experimental electronic approach from the modular synthesizer retail outlet the collective maintained in London, an enterprise that simultaneously informed their instructional sessions and concert appearances. Gavin Pykerman, recording as Koova, Simon Lynch under the alias Yes Effect, and Phil Ventre, known as Pip Williams, formed the trio, each of whom had already built separate careers in electro before they opened London Modular in Hackney Wick, East London in 2012. By hosting workshops and presenting live sets that employed the store’s modules, the three offered attendees practical demonstrations of music-making within the Eurorack system. Their debut appeared in 2016 as the self-titled EP on ART Records and was followed several months later by Out of Sync. In 2017 they issued Wolves and Home Grown on Hypercolour while continuing to prioritize operation of the shop, the workshops, and live performances. The next year they returned to ART with the more experimental-sounding Turn Off the Light EP and simultaneously released the post-dubstep and acid-referencing INTLBLK006 on International Black. Precious Materials arrived on ART in 2019; that same year the group also delivered Galaxy Exploration on Private Persons and the Material EP on Dimensions Recordings. Electrix issued We Are the Mod! at the start of 2020.
