Country music has long drawn entertainers willing to exploit stereotypes of rural simplicity, with Hee Haw representing one of the more recent and widely recognized cases. Preceding that program by many years, the comedy and music duo Lonzo & Oscar—made up of Lloyd George and Rollin Sullivan—toured as an opening act for Eddy Arnold. Their 1947 hit single “I’m My Own Grandpa,” which later served as Grandpa Jones’s signature song, allowed them to end their association with Arnold and establish themselves as independent attractions through performances on the Grand Ole Opry. Once Lloyd George left the partnership, Rollin “Oscar” Sullivan brought in a new collaborator and sustained the aw-shucks routine well into the 1970s, since performers of that type, often labeled Lonzos in a derogatory sense, proved easily interchangeable.
