After completing high school in Tobago, Lord Nelson—born Robert Nelson—joined the many calypsonians from the island who traveled to the United States in search of greater opportunities. Success came not on American soil but upon his return to the Caribbean, where he has long been recognized as a leading figure in soca, the blend of soul and calypso that has anchored Trinidadian music since the mid-1970s. Having grown up in Tobago, Nelson departed for Brooklyn with hopes of improved prospects, yet he was conscripted almost immediately into the U.S. military and deployed to Korea. It was during his service there that he first performed as a singer and comedian in Army productions. Upon returning to the States, he joined West Indian steel bands in Brooklyn, delivering distinctive interpretations of existing calypso numbers that resonated strongly within the local Caribbean audience. Only after forming a friendship with fellow calypsonian Mighty Duke, who served as his mentor, did Nelson begin composing original songs. His approach fused traditional calypso with the funk and American popular music he encountered daily, most notably on the Caribbean successes “La La” and “King Liar.” Although he did not pioneer soca, his popularity grew sufficiently for him to claim the Uncrowned King title in 1989 at Trinidad’s Carnival in the contest reserved for artists based outside the island. Signing with Shanachie in 1990 gave his recordings wider international reach than most West Indian releases enjoyed at the time, allowing him to tour globally despite shifting to digital production instead of live instrumentation. His first album for the label, When the World Turns Around, presented a digital reworking of the earlier Love You Forever, originally issued on the small Joker imprint. As the uncle of rising soca and rapso performer Mojah, Nelson maintains an active schedule of recording and live appearances.
