Biography
Lord Runningclam, much like countless other figures in electronic music, first developed his abilities within rock and roll circles. At that stage he performed under the name David de Laski and appeared with assorted rock groups along the East Coast. Relocating to Los Angeles, he teamed with drummer Alex Spurkel, vocalist Roxanne Morganstern, and programmer James Lumb to launch Electric Skychurch, an early leader in the electro-fusion field. The band’s signing with Moonshine Records in the early ’90s gave de Laski a lasting creative base. Several years afterward he adopted the “alter ego” Lord Runningclam, a spaced-out, experimental groovester devoted to trip-hop music for the psychedelic generation. Runningclam’s debut release, the six-song EP Fun for the Whole Family, arrived in 1998 and earned rotation in clubs plus alternative broadcasts worldwide. Two selections later appeared on vinyl. The sudden change of name and direction left critics and listeners uncertain, though many still regard the project as intriguing even if it falls short of broad commercial appeal. Its mixture of beats, spoken word contributed by Ken Nordine, and sound samples produces a forward-thinking texture that draws thoughtful listeners from both electronic and organic domains.
