Lorraine Ferro

Lorraine Ferro resides in the suburbs encircling New York City and performs as a commanding vocalist in the adult alternative pop-rock realm. Her bold, intense delivery has prompted comparisons to Melissa Etheridge, Joan Osborne, Sheryl Crow, and Alanis Morissette. She channels the same raw tension Morissette often employs, yet also adopts the blues-inflected approach associated with Etheridge, Osborne, and Crow. Far removed from the fragile, understated approach of Jewel or Suzanne Vega, Ferro operates as a full-throated belter whose broad range serves her introspective, emotionally charged material. A native of Dix Hills, New York, she honed her craft amid the metropolitan outskirts. Throughout the 1990s she logged numerous appearances at Manhattan clubs, yet earned her primary income from the jingle trade, voicing spots for Folgers Coffee, Nabisco, Pillsbury, GMC Trucks, and additional clients. She also held a staff-writing position at EMI, where her songs were recorded by Susan Ashton on “Stand” and by Christian pop-rock artist Margaret Becker on “Only Your Love.” In live settings she regularly supplied backing vocals for Lesley Gore, and she contributed background vocals to 1990s albums by Liz Queler and Dar Williams. Only in the early 2000s did she issue her own debut, Languishing in Turbulence, which appeared on the Firethorn label in 2001.
