Biography
Los Abandoned came together in 2002 after two separate Los Angeles bands dissolved. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Lady P along with lead guitarist Don Verde had each been displaced by those breakups, so the pair forged an immediate musical bond rooted in shared circumstance. They began laying down demo recordings inside the Verdes’ basement before recruiting bassist Vira Lata and drummer Dulce to complete the lineup. Lady P adopted the ukulele as her primary instrument, and she and Verde incorporated Casio keyboard textures that defined the group’s distinctive palette—a singular mixture of 1980s proto-electronica, bubblegum pop, new wave, and Latin rock. Their words shift without warning between English and Spanish, occasionally mid-phrase, while the combination of raw guitars, catchy melodies, and nostalgic electronics arrived at an opportune moment. The band issued two independent EPs—demotape in 2002 and the self-titled EP in 2004—before signing with Sanctuary in 2006. That same year saw the arrival of their debut full-length, Mix Tape, which first appeared as a digital-only version containing two bonus tracks and later received a standard CD release.
