Los Campesinos de Michoacan originated in Redwood City, a suburb located just south of San Francisco, yet the ensemble specializes in the traditional repertoire of Michoacan in southwest Mexico. Michoacan native Salvador Baldovinos assembled the group in Redwood City during 1983, and their approach diverges from that of bands based elsewhere in Mexico through prominent use of the harp, which Baldovinos himself performs. The musicians completed two recording sessions for Arhoolie Records—one in 1985 and another in 1987—which were subsequently issued together on the band’s self-titled CD. Once those sessions concluded, Baldovinos relocated with his family, among them his wife Elisa Baldovinos who contributes vocals to the group, to Yakima, WA. As of 2003 he remained active there, performing at local parties.
