Emerging from New England amid the emo wave that swept through the early 2000s, the punk rock outfit Lost City Angels began with drummer Adam Shaw, bassist Duggan, and guitarist Drew Indingaro. Dynamic, energetic punk rock demos flowed from the trio almost immediately. Adding vocalist Ron Ragona and guitarist Nicholas Bacon enabled the band to enter the club circuit and cultivate a following throughout 2001. Several songs tracked with former Mighty Mighty Bosstones member Nate Albert prompted the quintet to assemble its strongest material into an eponymous album released by Nitro Records in 2002. Live dates alongside Dropkick Murphys, Teen Idols, and Autopilot Off followed, after which the Boston-based group signed to Stay Gold Records, an imprint of Universal. Appearances with Spitalfield and Catch 22 preceded the April 2005 arrival of Broken World, which in turn led to a support tour with Social Distortion. Preparations for the next album were disrupted when Ragona and Bacon departed abruptly in summer 2006. A few months afterward, Sweeney Todd, formerly of Dead Pets, was introduced as the new lead vocalist.
