Originating in Cleveland, Ohio, the folk and bluegrass group Lost State of Franklin came together after one of its founders, J. Scott Franklin, lost his job in 2004. Turning himself into a nomadic solo performer, the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist received an invitation to appear at Chicago’s 2006 Cash Bash. He agreed to take part, yet several months beforehand Franklin witnessed guitarist Rob Franklin Muzick on stage; his subsequent request for Muzick to share the Cash Bash bill marked the ensemble’s creation. Once the Chicago set concluded, the pair lined up further dates, leading Muzick to recommend bringing in an upright bass player. Franklin got in touch with former rock bassist David Mooser, who came aboard soon afterward. Tyler Postma completed the roster, and the band issued its debut CD, Quarter to Lonely, in 2007.
