Longtime bluegrass figure Lou Reid, recognized for his vocal and mandolin work, launched the group Carolina in the early 1990s. After prior stints with Doyle Lawson and the Seldom Scene, he assembled the band in 1992 and saw it claim the IBMA Emerging Artist of the Year award by 1994. Although membership evolved across the following decade, the signature sound stayed prominent. Carolina Blue served as the debut release, followed in 1995 by Carolina Moon, an IBMA Album of the Year nominee. Rebel Records then issued the third project, Lou Reid & Carolina, in 1996 and Blue Heartache four years later. Five years and another personnel shift elapsed before Time appeared in 2005 on Lonesome Day Records. Vocalist Christy Reid, guitarist Kevin Richardson, banjoist Trevor Watson, and bassist Joe Hannabach joined Reid for the sessions, which also included guest turns from Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, and Jerry Douglas.
