Biography
Louise Rutkowski first gained notice for her arresting vocals on the 4AD releases Filigree & Shadow and Blood by This Mortal Coil, as well as on the Hope Blister’s Smile’s OK. Born in Scotland, she landed a CBS contract at 19 during the early 1980s and cut the album Sunset Gun with session keyboardist Pete Wingfield. An Interscope deal followed, under which she recorded the unreleased The Kindness of Strangers with Massive Attack string arranger Craig Armstrong; legal obstacles kept the project from appearing. In 2001, working independently, she issued the six-track collection of Randy Newman covers that contained “Real Emotional Girl” and “You Can Leave Your Hat On.” Although 4AD did not issue the EP itself, the label’s mail-order channel made it obtainable.
