Love City Groove, the dance/rap collective chosen to represent the UK at the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest, initially joined the selection process simply for amusement. Their polished yet energetic reworking of the Stereo MC’s approach caught judges by surprise during the qualifiers. Fronted by Beanz (b. Stephen Rudden) alongside rappers Jay Williams, Paul Hardy and ‘Reason’, the track—a blend of rapped verses and sung sections that shared the act’s name—earned strong radio support and chart traction across the UK. The entry also lent the contest a degree of credibility it rarely enjoyed, turning into a regular fixture on summer 1995 pop playlists. Press coverage later highlighted a dispute when runners-up Dear Jon claimed the single had already reached club DJs in January 1995, although the disclosure did not breach existing regulations. Jonathan King predicted the song would ‘either win or come last’; in the event it achieved neither outcome, securing a solid UK Top 5 position. Before this breakthrough the members had each pursued music careers without success, yet the Eurovision result opened the door to recording their debut album at London’s Nomis Studios, where every participant contributed to the songwriting.
