Biography
Lucid Nation emerged from Los Angeles in 1994, channeling an intense experimental current through rock while carving out their own conceptual strain of alternative pop and rock that echoes the exploratory paths once charted by Sonic Youth and Pere Ubu. The group’s roster has shifted repeatedly since its inception. Early recordings earned them slots supporting acts such as Joan of Arc and Bikini Kill. Their debut full-length, The Stillness of Over, arrived in 1997 and demonstrated an uncommon knack for weaving disparate sonic elements into a cohesive whole. American Stonehenge followed as their second album in 1998, with DNA appearing in 2000. At that stage the California unit coalesced around Tamra Spivey on vocals and guitar, Tia Sprocket on drums, Grit Maldonado on bass, Ronnie Pontiac handling guitar and bass, and Danette Lee on guitar. This configuration recorded the band’s fourth release, Suburban Legends, which reached stores in 2001. A wholesale personnel change ensued, retaining only Spivey and Pontiac while incorporating bassist Greta Brinkman, guitarist Larry Schemel, percussionist Kayla Tabb, keyboardist Diane Naegel, and former Hole drummer Patty Schemel. The revised lineup’s first outing was the double album Tacoma Ballet in 2002.
