Kate Hart performs under the arresting stage identity of Lucy Mongrel. The character is said to have originated in New York and made her first stage appearances in 1999. The following year saw the arrival of Mongrel’s self-titled debut album, whose track listing included “Thank You,” “Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed,” “Max the Circus Cat,” “Meet in the Streets,” and “Don’t Call It Too Late.” Mongrel’s regular ensemble features guitarist Dan McInerney, bassist Alex Dore, drummer Steve Peterson, percussionist John Boucher, keyboardist Joel Bell, and backing vocalists Susie K and Kathi McDonald. Each of these musicians has previously worked with such prominent acts as Madonna, the Pointer Sisters, the Kingsmen, Elton John, the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, the Goo Goo Dolls, and numerous others. Late in 2000, between live engagements, Mongrel began recording her second album, Lucy, I’m Home.
