Maurer benefited from instruction under Haack, Konzertmeister to Frederick the Great. Following a distinguished appearance in Berlin, he earned a place in the royal chapel at fourteen. He later led Count Vsevolozhsky’s orchestra in Riga, spent eight years journeying through Germany and Paris, and then rejoined the Count’s service. In St. Petersburg he rose to director of the French opera. For the violin he produced ten concertos, six quartets, and assorted chamber pieces whose writing reflected both breadth and technical brilliance. He also wrote the operas “Aloise,” “Der neue Paris,” and “Die Runenschrift.”
