While Lui Fong first earned recognition in Hong Kong for his acting work that started during the mid-1980s, he has also built a solid yet underappreciated body of work as a pop vocalist. His entry into the profession came through television roles, most notably his appearance in the multi-part TVB drama Police Cadet in the mid- to late 1980s. That same project marked the start of his recording activity, since he performed its theme songs. He maintained his association with TVB in later years, supplying the vocal themes for Siblings of Ice and Virtue (1985), The Flying Fox on Snowy Mountain (1985), The Partner (1993), and Kindred Spirit (1997). In addition he took parts in numerous Hong Kong feature films and issued sporadic pop albums, yet he never achieved wide popularity as a vocalist, a circumstance some observers attribute to his lack of conventional star appeal.
