Biography
Milan, a Spanish composer and writer, devoted the greater part of his life to Valencia. Across a span of twenty-six years he released the bulk of his output, a body of work notable for its wide array of musical phenomena. His creative focus remained on vihuela compositions intended for the guitar. These pieces hold particular significance as the earliest known source of explicit written guidance on tempo. Each work includes a vocal line whose performance mode—whether instrumental or sung—remains unspecified. Within the pages of “El maestro” he assembled forty fantasias, four tentos, six pavans, and an extensive set of vocal pieces. The fantasias demand considerable virtuosity through rapid runs and ornate turns. The tentos feature indicated rubato, allowing expressive stretching of time. His pavans follow the customary duple or triple meter, and the term “sonada” appears among the earliest documented references to the sonata. The villancicos contained in “El maestro” adopt an ABBA formal scheme, inviting singers to embellish the vocal line. Although Milan drew upon modal frameworks throughout the collection, he handled them unconventionally, freely blending modes and applying accidentals with notable frequency.
