Biography
Luis Galvão entered the world in Juazeiro, Bahia, then relocated to Salvador in the same state, where he first connected with Moraes Moreira and Paulinho Boca de Cantor. Together they established Os Novos Baianos in 1968. Serving as the ensemble’s chief lyricist, he authored most of its repertoire in partnership with Moreira, the material bearing a strong Tropicalia influence, and he joined the V Festival de Música Popular Brasileira—formally the Festival of Brazilian Popular Music presented by TV Record in São Paulo—the following year, contributing the song “De Vera,” which he had written with Moraes Moreira and which Os Novos Baianos performed. In 1997 Galvão issued the volume Anos 70: Novos e Baianos and succeeded in reassembling the original Os Novos Baianos lineup to record the double live CD Infinito Circular. Luis Galvão died on October 22, 2022, at the age of 87.
