Biography
Luke Holder’s earliest musical explorations as a boy centered on piano and drums, yet an unexpected gift from his grandmother—an electric guitar accepted in lieu of payment for her services at church—shifted his path. He initially viewed the instrument as something he might later sell, but growing enthusiasm prompted him to develop his skills and form a group with classmates from high school. When that ensemble disbanded, Holder joined the punk outfit Brother’s Grim, after which he struck out alone to record under his own name. His focus then turned toward indie pop, beginning with the early-2000 release Playing for an Audience of Candles. Penumbra appeared six months afterward, leading to an extended period of live performances and recovery before he returned to recording. The resulting album, This Was a Giant, surfaced in 2002.
