Biography
Madison, Wisconsin, may have shaped America's alternative and college rock scenes in countless ways, yet the city had never served as fertile ground for heavy metal prior to Luna Mortis. Formed around 2006 under the brief name the Ottoman Empire, the group blended disparate influences ranging from Megadeth and Nevermore to Dream Theater and Children of Bodom, which yielded their independently funded debut full-length, Way of the Blade, issued before the year ended. The 2007 EP The Answer: Does Not Exist, helmed by producer Jason Suecof (known for work with Trivium and Chimaira, among others), secured the band a deal with Century Media and paved the way for their sophomore album, The Absence, which arrived in February 2009. At that stage the roster featured vocalist Mary Zimmer, lead guitarist and vocalist Brian Koenig, rhythm guitarist Cory Scheider, bassist Jake Bare, and drummer Erik Madsen.
