Biography
For many years Lynn Seaton has functioned primarily as an in-demand sideman, and to date his sole outing as a bandleader remains the 1991 Timeless album Bassman's Basement. He began classical guitar studies at age seven, shifting to the bass two years afterward. After enrolling at the University of Oklahoma he performed in the surrounding area before relocating to Cincinnati in September 1980, where engagements followed with both the Steve Schmidt Trio and the Blue Wisp Big Band. Between 1982 and 1984 he served on the faculty of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music, an affiliation he has maintained through ongoing teaching commitments. In September 1984 he resigned that post to tour with Woody Herman’s orchestra; ten months later he left Herman for a two-year worldwide engagement with Count Basie’s orchestra. Since that period the bassist, recognized as a highly supportive and swinging accompanist equally capable of robust solos, has worked freelance with an array of prominent figures that includes Tony Bennett, George Shearing on a six-month tour, Joe Williams, Ernestine Anderson, Monty Alexander, Diane Schuur, the Buck Clayton Big Band, Scott Hamilton, Bud Shank, Mark Murphy, Teddy Wilson and numerous leading bop, swing and mainstream artists. Among the many musicians with whom he has recorded are Basie, Herman, Schuur, Howard Alden, the Blue Wisp Big Band, Cal Collins, Ted Des Plantes, Tim Hagans, Bobby Shew, Maxine Sullivan and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
