Biography
Thompson first saw the light of day on 28 January 1934 in Holly Springs, Mississippi, USA. During his early years a neighbor, Magic Sam, nurtured his budding interest in music. He later chose the bass as his instrument and performed over the decades with a range of blues groups, among them the Magic Sam Blues Band, Easy Baby And His Houserockers and Cousin Joe. Most of these engagements took place in and around Chicago, which became the family’s home from the late 1940s onward. Soul singer Syl Johnson is his youngest brother, while blues guitarist and singer Jimmy Johnson is another, older sibling. Thompson, who occasionally appeared alongside both of these more celebrated brothers, has also been billed at times as Mack Thompson.
