Formed while its members were still in high school, the Dallas group quickly began playing shows at clubs and halls across the city. Although none of the musicians ranks among leading songwriters, reviewers have consistently noted the strong unity that marks every Macavity performance and recording. Early opening dates for Chomsky and Valve led to a spot on a local compilation album. In 2001 the band signed with Idol Records and issued its debut album, Falling Hard in the Key of E, the next year. Festival appearances at South By Southwest and other showcases soon followed. Calling their style “spemo,” a blend of space rock and emo rock, Macavity has drawn comparisons to Jimmy Eat World and the Flaming Lips.
