In Athens, Georgia, 1996 marked the reunion of multi-instrumentalist Joshua McKay and his drumming brother Mischo McKay, who had spent the prior three years apart after sharing a home in Gainesville, Florida, as members of Emperor Moth. There the pair joined forces with fellow multi-instrumentalist Kai Reidl to launch Macha, whose sound merges drone rock and Indonesian folk traditions through an eclectic arsenal that encompasses voice, guitar, and drums alongside hammered dulcimer, vibraphone, gongs, and a synthesizer dubbed the fun machine. Jetset Records put out the group’s self-titled debut in 1998. One year later, See It Another Way arrived, coinciding with the permanent addition of yet another multi-instrumentalist, Wes Martin. In 2000 Macha collaborated with the brother-led drone band Bedhead—featuring Bubba and Matt Kadane—on the mini-album Macha Loved Bedhead, before returning in 2004 with Forget Tomorrow.
