Biography
Mackenzie Theory originated in Melbourne, Australia during 1971, standing out as one of the rare fully instrumental groups to gain traction within the country's mainstream rock and pop scenes after the decline of instrumental rock ‘n’ roll and surf acts from the early 1960s. Their 1973 release of a completely instrumental album on Australian soil reached the charts. Rob Mackenzie guided the ensemble through his evocative, otherworldly guitar work, while Cleis Pearce's viola contributions shaped much of the group's unique sonic character. The lineup also featured Andy Majewski on drums and Mike Leadabrand on bass. The band dissolved by the middle of 1974 after Mackenzie received an Arts Council grant for guitar studies across Europe and America. Subsequently, he relocated to Los Angeles, USA, where he performed and participated in recording sessions alongside up-and-coming bands, adding guitar solo touches to demo recordings or capturing eastern and various other ethnic musical styles. Pearce redirected her abilities toward folk and diverse eclectic projects, maintaining a steady output of recordings.
