Biography
Romy Hoffman, based in Melbourne, Australia, performs under the rap alias Macromantics and launched her career at fifteen as guitarist for Ben Lee’s group Noise Addict. During tours and shows with that band she developed a deep affinity for hip-hop, folding its elements into her own work while retaining a punk-rooted, D.I.Y. ethos. Her first Macromantics release, the Hyperbolic Logic EP, came out as a self-issued project in 2004 and showcased the fervent, frequently sharp-witted delivery that would define her MC persona. Sharing stages alongside turntablist DJ Amy, she built recognition by opening for an eclectic range of acts that included Architecture in Helsinki, Erase Errata, and Sage Francis. The full-length debut Moments in Movement appeared across Australia in summer 2006, receiving a J Award nomination for Album of the Year, before reaching the United States through Kill Rock Stars in early 2007.
