Biography
Chris Lehmann, vocalist for Heavy Into Jeff, teamed up with Adam Aaronson—formerly the drummer in My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult—to launch Magnified in San Francisco during 1997. The group’s sound took clear cues from Heavy Into Jeff’s Replacements-tinged post-grunge power pop. Guitarist Andy Shaw and bassist Mike Kelly completed the lineup, and the resulting quartet soon signed with TVT. Their first album, Stand in Traffic, appeared in 2000 and was produced by Philip Steir, the onetime Consolidated drummer whose remix and programming credits also included work with Bush, Live, and Chumbawamba. The record therefore showed the band’s readiness to weave electronic touches into its fundamentally organic, grungy pop framework.
