Biography
Mahavatar stands out on the alternative metal landscape for its front-line roster of women, whose output channels a rare capacity for conveying fraught and tormented subjects through roiling guitar work and weighty rock dynamics. The group’s purpose finds further expression in the name it chose. Of Indian derivation, Mahavatar originally denotes immortality, yet the New York ensemble layered on its own definition: Mind Hypnotic Vision Towards Revolution. Lizza Hayson, the band’s singer, initiated the project and was subsequently joined by drummer Peter Lobodzinski and guitarist Karla Williams. Following a series of New York performances that drew fervent audience reactions, the musicians committed their material to a demo. In 2000 bassist Eddie Gasior completed the roster, after which the band maintained a rigorous touring schedule.
