Biography
The Queens embody South African township music in its purest form, frequently appearing alongside deep-voiced "groaner" Simon Mahlathini in both live performances and studio recordings. They originated in 1964 as a session harmony ensemble before achieving widespread recognition in the '70s, propelled by their tough vocal style and rock-solid mbaqanga backing band. Several founding members have more recently accompanied Mahlathini on tours through the States, where their sprightly dancing and gutsy harmonies found favor with appreciative Western audiences. Their performances also feature prominently on the compilation album Soweto Never Sleeps - Classic Female Zulu Jive (Shanachie 43041), alongside other sister groups.
