Mako Sica blend the raw ethos of punk with Chicago’s longstanding experimental leanings to shape expansive sonic journeys that graze post-rock, prog, and avant jazz yet sidestep any single stylistic allegiance. The lineup unites guitarist and trumpeter Przemyslaw Drazek with percussionist Michael Kendrick—both previously active in the electro-acoustic outfit Rope—and guitarist/vocalist Brent Fuscaldo. While traveling through Arizona’s Painted Desert, Fuscaldo coined the band’s name, drawn from the Sioux Lakota phrase meaning “land bad,” a phrase that resonates with the group’s vast and occasionally ominous stretches. Their first recording, the cassette-only Noise Attic Session 2 issued by PlusTapes in a limited run of 100 copies, joined the September 2009 live EP Mayday at Strobe in documenting the subtleties and live energy of the largely instrumental approach. Spring 2010 saw the arrival of the trio’s first proper album, Dual Horizon, released on La Societe Expeditionnaire.
