Biography
Composer, arranger, and saxophonist Malcolm Hunter blends classic, jazz, new age, and rock elements into a spiritually driven instrumental voice. That symphonic dimension first emerged fully on his debut album, Alpha & Omega, issued in 2024.
Born in Union, South Carolina, in 1956, Hunter began piano lessons at five and later took up the alto saxophone during grade school. Drawn to athletics, he entered Northwestern University on a football scholarship, initially majoring in music under saxophonist Fred Hemke while also studying French and Spanish. After his hopes of a professional football career ended, he pursued a master’s degree at NYU, where he resumed saxophone study and developed a lasting affinity for jazz, Latin, and Brazilian music. He sustained those interests through years of corporate employment at Wells Fargo, performing and studying whenever possible. Upon retiring in 2023, Hunter devoted greater attention to composition, resulting in the 2024 release of Alpha & Omega and its fusion of classical and jazz-infused instrumental pieces.
