Emerging from Bergen, Norway, in 1991, the industrially grounded black metal band Malignant Eternal began as a project led by vocalist T. Reaper (Torgrim Øyre) alongside keyboardist, programmer, and drummer Brynjulv Guddal. Bassist Even Ormestad joined them for the self-produced 1995 debut Tårnet, after which Tome Stien assumed bass and guitar duties for the 1997 Napalm Records follow-up Far Beneath the Sun, with Roy Ole Førland added on keyboards. Their 1998 EP 20th Century Beast introduced second guitarist Arve Isdal, while the 1999 album Alarm featured full-time bassist Kenneth Korsvold and extended their electronically driven extreme metal into gothic and rock & roll directions, earning further praise yet serving as their final recording. T. Reaper had already collaborated with Gorgoroth and Obtained Enslavement, but Arve Isdal’s departure to Enslaved effectively ended the group, which briefly performed under the name M-Eternal before halting activity.
