Mamajuana

Dominican composer and arranger Eddi González formed the 21-piece ensemble Mamajuana, whose four vocalists comprise three natives of Santiago de los Caballeros and one from San Francisco de Macorís. Taking its title from an exotic aphrodisiac beverage, the band fuses Afro-Caribbean and contemporary rhythms behind romantic lyrics. Sony International issued the group’s self-titled debut album, which showcased the hit singles “Mamasota” and “Sin Un Beso Suyo.” Within two weeks on the U.S. market, Mamajuana had moved 20,000 copies.
