Japanese pianist Mamiko Watanabe draws from longstanding jazz conventions yet brings an unmistakable personal voice to her performances, prompting comparisons with McCoy Tyner. Born in Fukuoka, she started piano lessons at the Yamaha School of Music when she turned four and completed her first brief original piece three years later. A primary influence was the renowned Japanese-American bandleader Toshiko Akiyoshi. In 1999 a scholarship took her to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where she concentrated on jazz piano, improvisation, and composition and earned multiple honors. While still a student she reached the semi-finals of the Montreux solo piano competition on two occasions, traveled across Europe, and appeared alongside Joe Lovano and Bobby McFerrin. Relocating to New York in 2003, she quickly entered the local circuit, performing at the Blue Note and the Lenox Lounge and appearing at festivals in Delaware, Israel, and Malaysia; she also worked with the Valery Ponomarev Big Band and its septet counterpart. Her first album as a leader, One After Another, was recorded in 2005. Three self-released projects followed—Origin/Jewel in 2007, Mother Earth in 2010, and Flying Without Wings in 2018—before she joined Jojo Records. Her fifth release, Being Guided by the Light, issued in 2024 as her initial effort for the label, included drummer Billy Hart.
