After the breakup of Manfred Mann, Mike Hugg and Manfred Mann launched Chapter Three to explore jazz-infused rock, treating the venture as a parallel pursuit alongside their profitable work scoring television jingles. Initially operating under the name Emanon, the lineup featured Bernie Living on alto saxophone and flute, Steve York on bass, and Craig Collinge on drums, while drawing additional contributions from leading session jazz players including Harry Beckett, Derek Wadsworth, Chris Pyne, and Dave Quincey.

The ensemble quickly secured a place on the progressive rock circuit, yet remained stuck within modest club settings. Their two albums displayed strong imagination and craft, though they startled listeners who anticipated material resembling Manfred Mann. Ongoing difficulties arose because Mann and Hugg personally underwrote the costs while attempting to shed their pop-group identity. Those who backed the effort found the results worthwhile, even as Manfred soon gravitated toward broader commercial success with Manfred Mann's Earth Band.
