Biography
Trained by Gil, Calvo, and Fuertes, the Spanish composer Caballero acquired proficiency on piano, violin, and flute while also studying composition and harmony. At the conservatory of music in Madrid his instructors further included Vega, Eslava, and Albéniz. Before his vision deteriorated, Caballero turned out a steady stream of zarzuelas—dramatic scores that blended spoken dialogue with national flavorings—demonstrating both skill and abundance. He composed, performed, and conducted these works in Cuba, Lisbon, Madrid, and numerous locations across South America. Sacred music also occupied him; he produced several masses among other liturgical pieces.
