Based in Seattle, pianist Marc Seales focuses his efforts on post-bop compositions. Collaborations have taken him alongside numerous figures in the jazz world, including Don Lanphere, Benny Carter, Bobby Hutcherson, and Art Pepper. Three albums from his ensemble New Stories appear on the Origin Arts label, and that same group joined forces with vocalist Mark Murphy for the Grammy-nominated release Song for Geese. Studio sessions draw Seales out on solo tours with some frequency, while New Stories engagements bring him to concert stages on a regular basis as well. The Marc Seales Quartet operates under his leadership, and he participates in Milo Peterson's Jazz Disciples. Echoes of Herbie Hancock's pre-funk period define much of Seales's approach, though influences from additional artists such as Bill Evans surface throughout his playing. At the University of Washington, he directs Jazz Studies and delivers instruction in both the historical and performative dimensions of jazz.
