Marçal endured lifelong financial struggles despite the acclaim earned by his works, many written in tandem with Bide. Employed as a radio percussionist from 1934, he first encountered Bide at Rádio Nacional and launched the celebrated partnership. Their debut effort, the samba “Agora é Cinza,” achieved widespread popularity at the 1934 Carnival; Mário Reis had already committed it to disc in 1933, claiming the year’s contest prize and prompting numerous later takes. “A Primeira Vez,” another of their notable pieces, received a recording by João Gilberto. The duo likewise composed the marcha junina “Ninguém Fura o Balão,” captured by Almirante in 1934. In that same year Mário Reis recorded “Nosso Romance.” Carlos Galhardo followed with “Sorrir” in 1937. Two further successes arrived in 1938: Orlando Silva released “Tua Beleza” while Francisco Alves issued “Meu Primeiro Amor.”
