Biography
Marcello Sebastiani developed into a multifaceted bassist whose path reached jazz only after earlier explorations had already taken shape. He first performed in progressive rock bands before shifting, at the start of the 1970s, to classical and chamber repertoire on double bass. Traditional jazz figures such as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbeck, Duke Ellington, and Errol Garner sparked a deeper interest that came to dominate his work by the middle of the decade. From that point forward he has appeared alongside Garrison Fewell, Badal Roy, Sageer Kahn, and Karl Potter. Equally at ease as a composer, he moves across post-bop melodies, experimental forms, and impressionistic textures while maintaining an earthy, well-rounded tone that anchors his playing. The same command allows him to push ensembles ahead with incisive walking lines, shape extended and finely detailed solos, or evoke airy, atmospheric textures. His initial recordings, Suite & Songs and Miniatures, spotlight his partner, harpist Antonella Angelozzi, whose contributions sometimes impart a New Agey character to the music.
