Biography
Born on November 5, 1967, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Marcelo D2 spent his early years navigating the favelas and Andarai streets in the city’s poorer districts, well removed from the affluent beachside neighborhoods. Economic pressures pushed him into the workforce at age 13, and prior to his rise to prominence he held positions as a doorman, paper boy, cleaner, vendor, and office boy. Departing home at a young age ultimately aided his survival, whereas many childhood companions who stayed behind fell victim to local traffickers and perished in successive armed clashes; by nineteen he had completed military service and entered marriage.
Planet Hemp, the group that first elevated Marcelo to national attention, originated in Catete. A Dead Kennedys T-shirt worn by D2 initiated an encounter with Skunk in the early 1990s; their common enthusiasm for skatepunk, rock, underground scenes, and cannabis culture prompted the formation of the band, whose name referenced High Times magazine. Rafael on guitar, Formigão on bass, and Bacalhau on drums later joined D2 and Skunk, fusing rap vocals with psychedelic guitar lines. Following Skunk’s death in 1994, D2 recruited Black Alien and B Negão to share vocal duties. The resulting debut album, Usuario, appeared in 1995 and sold more than 5,000 copies across Brazil; two years afterward came Os Cães Ladram Mas a Caravana Não Para. Three years after that release, A Invasão do Sagaz Homem Fumaça arrived, succeeded in 2001 by the live recording MTV ao Vivo: Planet Hemp.
Determined to pursue an individual path and broaden his musical scope, D2 had already issued a 1998 solo album blending hip-hop and samba while recounting personal experiences; critics responded favorably and the record moved 150,000 units. His follow-up solo project, A Procura da Batida Perfeita, emerged in 2003, propelling him to major status within Brazil and securing the awards for which he had been nominated. International distribution across Europe, the United States, and Asia facilitated five European tours that included appearances at Womex, Montreux, Roskilde, and Reading, along with performances at venues such as Cité de la Musique in Paris. The album’s impact also led to a documentary DVD chronicling its making.
In 2004 D2 again reshaped his approach, employing his existing material as a foundation while breaking down beats and batucada rhythms; he assembled a 23-piece ensemble that functioned as an orchestra, stripping the hip-hop arrangements to acoustic form for a Brazilian MTV Unplugged session. Delivered live with robust percussion and a strong supporting band, the performances conveyed both infectious energy and emotional resonance. Subsequent world tours supplied material that coalesced into the 15-track album Meu Samba É Assim. Through the integration of Latin elements, incisive lyrics, and assertive delivery, Marcelo D2 has reshaped Brazilian hip-hop, prompting ongoing anticipation from critics and listeners alike for each new project.
