Biography
Born on December 25, 1988, in Ronciglione, Viterbo, Italy, Marco Mengoni first captured national attention as a contestant on the third season of the Italian edition of X Factor in 2009. He claimed victory on December 2, defeating runner-up Giuliano Rassu. Throughout the season the Italian pop singer delivered an eclectic selection of pop and rock covers in both Italian and English, ranging from Lucio Battisti’s “Insieme a Te Sto Bene” and Mia Martini’s “Almeno Tu Nell’universo” to Amy Winehouse’s “Back in Black” and Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”
Immediately after the finale he issued his debut single, “Dove Si Vola,” written for him by longtime Italian pop songwriter Bungaro. The track shot to number one on the Italian singles chart and anchored the hastily assembled seven-track mini album Dove Si Vola, released in 2009. That rush-released project gathered the remaining X Factor performances, among them Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” and Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer.”
A couple of months later Mengoni returned with the 2010 mini album Re Matto, another seven-track set of original Italian-language material. Its lead single, “Credimi Ancora,” reached the Top Five after Mengoni performed it at the 2010 Sanremo Music Festival, and the album itself topped the Italian albums chart.
