Biography
Marcus Butler commanded a YouTube following exceeding four million subscribers and ranked among the United Kingdom’s most prominent creators, his channel securing a spot inside the national Top 30, immediately behind acts such as Coldplay and the motoring program Top Gear. He regularly joined forces with fellow online personalities, among them fashion and beauty vlogger Zoella and prankster Caspar Lee, and joined a YouTube boy band that produced a charity single benefiting Comic Relief. Capitalizing on that audience, he published the 2015 autobiography Hello Life!, which doubled as a self-help manual, reached the Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller lists, and addressed topics ranging from his parents’ divorce to disastrous hair days.
Butler mounted a serious entry into music in January 2016 with the single “I’m Famous,” which featured singer/songwriter and fellow Brighton resident Conor Maynard. Two earlier recordings preceded the track: the 2013 satirical rap “I’m a Rapper,” issued to mark his one-million-subscriber milestone, and the 2016 rap “New Year Song,” assembled from resolutions posted by his Twitter followers. “I’m Famous” offered a satirical portrait of ostentatious rap-star living and of Butler’s own ascent, appeared on his self-founded label, and debuted at number 85 on the U.K. chart.
