Biography
Born on 23 February 1891 in Detroit, Michigan, USA, and passing away on 3 May 1969 in Inglewood, California, USA, Margaret Youngblood began performing as a youngster. Starting in 1920 she built a presence through radio broadcasts, phonograph records, and tours across vaudeville stages. Her sets centered on novelty material and mildly risqué selections, all shaped by a piping voice that conveyed sly innocence. The initial phase of her recording work, issued by Brunswick Records, concluded in 1925; after that she remained largely absent from the scene until 1949, when she cut several sides for Capitol Records. During the mid-1950s she also made appearances on the CBS radio program The Record Collectors.
Eleanore, one of Young’s three sisters, wed songwriter Richard Whiting, and the couple’s daughter became singer Margaret Whiting. Several numbers Young recorded were co-composed by her brother-in-law, among them “Somebody’s Wrong” and “Ukulele Lady.” Additional titles she documented include “Oh! By Jingo! Oh! By Gee!,” “O-oo Ernest,” “Hard-Hearted Hannah, The Vamp Of Savannah,” “Lovin’ Sam (The Sheik Of Alabam),” “Way Down Yonder In New Orleans,” “Stumbling,” “Whoa, Tillie, Take Your Time,” “Louisville Lou, The Vampin’ Lady,” “He May Be Your Good Man Friday,” “Mama Goes Where Papa Goes (Or Papa Don’t Go Out Tonight),” “Red Hot Henry Brown,” “He Loves It,” “Oogie Oogie Wa Wa,” and “Sweet Henry.”
