Biography
With classical vocal training behind them, Maria BC crafts melancholic and atmospheric songs that balance shapes, shadows, and emotions against technique, hooks, and formal structures. Drawing from literary archetypes of the dreamer and the watcher, the artist issued a self-recorded full-length debut titled Hyaline in 2022. Phone recordings and gathered audio samples prompted the musician to call the project a "sonic collage." Though it retained delicacy, the follow-up Spike Field emerged a year later with a looser and more expansive arrangement.
Originating from Ohio yet residing in Oakland, California, Maria BC sought comfort in childhood solitude, which encouraged early creative pursuits such as songwriting. After studying as a classical mezzo-soprano, the first EP, Devil's Rain from February 2021, was captured inside a single room to spare roommates and neighbors. Later that year, Hyaline was tracked across several rooms of a Brooklyn apartment. Session contributions joined phone recordings and audio samples, among them field recordings from nearby Prospect Park, before Father/Daughter Records issued the album in May 2022. Spike Field, the next release, was instead captured at a family friend's house featuring a creaky, out-of-tune piano and appeared on Sacred Bones in October 2023. The album employed a relaxed yet artful method intended to occupy more open spaces.
